Mt. Hope Family Center

After School Program

Mt. Hope Family Center's After School Program is an enrichment program for school-aged children who are in need of additional peer and adult support. The program is designed to help children work on improving their social skills in a safe and supportive environment. Through creating opportunities for children to experience positive relationships with peers and adults, we are committed to improving the quality of children's interpersonal lives.

We utilize the evidence-based PATHS (Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies) to improve children's skills in the following areas:

  • Conflict resolution
  • Social problem solving
  • Understanding individual differences
  • Self esteem
  • Understanding feelings
  • Friendships

Special events and field trips help support curriculum topics.

Peer groups for children are well supervised and each group of 8-10 children has a team of three trained adult counselors.

Recreational activities provide children with opportunities to work on social skills and experience positive relationships.

  • Free transportation to and from the program
  • Healthy snacks for the children when they arrive

The After School Program runs seven-week sessions throughout the year.  Children are scheduled to attend Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during a session from 4:00 until 6:00.  Busses will pick children up from school or home depending on when they are dismissed.

The After School Program is available to children of families who have ever received any form of public assistance. Half of our slots are designated specifically to families who are currently receiving Preventive Services from Monroe County (NY). For these slots, caseworkers make referrals directly to the After School Program. The other half of the slots is available by calling Mt. Hope Family Center directly to see if the child is eligible for the program.

At Mt. Hope Family Center, we are interested in understanding children's development, so that we, and other agencies around the country, can continue to offer programs to children that meet their needs. Children participating in the After School Program will be asked to take part in our ongoing research on child development and resiliency during the time they are in the program. We will always respect a child's choice to not participate in research. If they choose to participate, children get "points" for doing so, and they can cash points in for prizes several times during the year. All research information is kept strictly confidential.
