Summer Camp

Mt. Hope Family Center's Summer Camp is a free, fun program for children ages 10-12. Children participate in a large number of activities including music, arts and crafts, computers, sports, games, water fun, and skill building. Part of the purpose of the program is to help children work on improving their social skills in a safe and supportive environment. Through creating opportunities for children to experience positive relationships with both peers and adults, we are committed to improving the quality of children's interpersonal lives.

Part of the day is dedicated to an activity period called Skill Building. Children work on the following topics in an activity based setting:

  • Group Cohesiveness
  • Accepting self and others
  • Getting along with others
  • Dealing with violence

Special events are designed to help support these topics.

Peer groups for children to work and play with are well supervised and each group of 8-10 children has a team of three trained adult counselors.

Recreational activities provide children with opportunities to work on social skills and experience positive relationships.

  • Free transportation is provided to and from the camp
  • Healthy snacks and lunch are provided

Children attend camp for one week of the summer during the months of July and August. The camp day runs from 10AM to 4PM, with busses picking up the children between 8:30AM and 9:45AM.

Children between the ages of 10 and 12 may be eligible to participate in the program. The program is available to children of families who have ever received any form of public assistance and who meet program criteria. Families are urged to call Mt. Hope Family Center directly to see if their children are eligible for the camp.

At Mt. Hope Family Center, we are interested in understanding children's development, so that we, along with other agencies around the country, can continue to offer programs to children that meet their needs. Children participating in the Summer Camp Program will be asked to take part in our ongoing research on child development and resiliency during the time they are in the program. We will always respect a child's choice to not participate in research. If they choose to participate, children get "points" for doing so, which they can cash in for prizes during the program. All research information is kept strictly confidential.
