Parenting Skills Training
Treatment Approach:
The Parenting Skills program has adopted the curriculum that was selected by the Parenting Skills Development Program Implementation Group. This collaborative group, composed of representatives from Preventive Services, mental health systems, funders, and other community representatives, reviewed model parenting skills curriculums from around the country and selected the most highly rated program to meet the needs of Preventive clients in our community. The model that was chosen, "The Incredible Years" has been selected as a Strengthening Families program by The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention as an "exemplary" Blueprints program by the office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention. This strengths-based parenting program focuses on teaching practical skills such as: setting effective limits, giving logical consequences, offering praise and rewards, dealing effectively with noncompliance, solving problems as a family, and reducing inappropriate behaviors. The program has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing parents' use of negative discipline strategies and in increasing parents' use of effective discipline strategies and praise.
Structure:
Monroe County (NY) Department of Human Service clients are referred for groups of approximately 12 per group. Mt. Hope Family Center provides transportation and snacks.
The curriculum consists of a 12-week group that runs 4 times per year, for a total of approximately 48 parents served per year.
