What does the study involve?
The study consists of three parts: an initial lab visit, an at home portion where teens will complete daily surveys and provide saliva samples, and a follow-up 12-18 months after the initial visit that will be completed over the phone, the internet or by mail.
At the lab visit, you and your child will be asked questions about things such as your mood, past experiences, thinking style, and coping strategies. You and your child will also be asked to participate in some computer tasks, and your child will be asked to provide a saliva sample. This visit will take about 3.5-4 hours. We will provide free parking or bus passes.
Next, we will ask your child to participate in a few activities from home in the week following your campus visit. We will ask him/her to complete a short survey several times per day for a period of seven days. These surveys can be completed on an internet-enabled phone, tablet, or computer. In addition, during the same period of time, we will ask your teen to provide saliva samples four times per day for two days, and to mail those samples back to our lab in a pre-paid envelope.
Finally, we will ask your child to participate in a follow-up about 12-18 months after your initial visit. For the follow-up, you will not need to come to the University of Rochester—your child can participate over the phone, mail, and Internet. Top of Page
How will we be compensated for our time?
Your participation is very important to us. As compensation for your participation, we will pay your family $100 for your initial visit ($50 each for parent and teen), and up to $60 for the daily surveys and saliva samples. Your child can earn $50 for the follow-up portion of the study, for a total of up to $210 per family. In addition, your child will be entered in raffles to win gift cards based on his/her completion of the daily surveys and saliva collection. Top of Page
